Music Feature: Falset

So back in December I saw that All That Remains was coming to Toronto. Before I could pitch in my band to open the show, I saw that I was beaten to the punch and the openers had already been announced. With every intention of heading to the show I had checked out the three bands I didn’t know, and the latest Music Feature is a band that really stood out for me. That band was the post-hardcore/metal outfit from Midland, Ontario: Falset.

The only tune I was able to find was a YouTube video for “What Are You Waiting For” released in 2016 // (The video above is the re-released version of the song with new vocalist Mike Julian off the new 'Here We Are' EP). I thought it was a sweet tune akin to bands like I Prevail and Bring Me The Horizon. Very catchy chorus that was stuck in my head for a few weeks, and heavy chords really pushing the emotions of the vocal melodies. A nice little touch in the chorus worth mentioning are the little triplets during the double kick – makes it a little more tasteful than just straight sixteenth notes. At this point I was stoked to see what their live show was like, but with the holidays and other prior engagements, I ended up skipping on the show since I would have only gotten there for All That Remains. I kept up with Falset though and I was rewarded a just a few weeks later with a brand new tune.

In early January, they released a music video for the song “Falling Off”, which is certainly the first taste of a bright future for Falset. It features their new vocalist Mike Julian, and the production has been stepped up quite nicely. A few seconds in, Julian comes in with a heavy, mighty scream to up the intensity. His voice reminds me a lot of Trevor Wentworth (Our Last Night) with a touch of Craig Owens (Chiodos, badXchannels) in the higher registers. Guitarists Zach Copeland and Braeden Kozy wrote up some tasty aggressive licks. The guitar riff during the verses is probably one of my favourite riffs I’ve heard from an up-and-comer in a while. Vocally, the chorus and melodies throughout the tune are heavy yet emotional and have been stuck in my head for weeks. Chance LaBrie’s drumming is impeccable – playing perfectly to the song keeping the intensity at the parts that ask for it, but opens it up to reinforce the melodies in the chorus. The music video was directed and shot by The Trenches Media whose name/work I’ve seen a lot lately (and they do a great job), and the lighting/set design was done by my bud Connor Robinson of metalcore locals Loyalist.

“Falling Off” is the first track off their upcoming EP ‘Here We Are’, which would be their first major release. It excites me because I’ve been itching to hear more tunes, especially hearing how much this band has evolved since “What Are You Waiting For”. We’ll be sure to share it around as soon as it is released // (The EP has since been released and listenable up above!). The Falset boys will also be hitting the road with Feels Like Home and Loyalist from April 20th to 22nd (Toronto, Barrie, TBA respectively), so I'll see you at the Toronto show! They have also been announced for the final Warped Tour stop in Toronto on July 17th!! In the meantime follow the links below to keep on track with Falset:

Thank you so very much for your comments in your article about Falset. I’m Mike’s grandfather. I believe in him and his endless dedication and commitment to the success of his band. He has started off at rock bottom and I hope the best is yet to come.
Thanks again and all the best.

Thank you for such an awesome article about Falset. I am the father of Mike and I can say that the band works tirelessly and with passion for their music. Absolute perfectionists that know what sound they want and are eager to share it with the world. I believe in your Mission Statement and I am so glad you decided to “shine a little light” on them with this article. All the best!
